Things to Do for Youngsters

Schokland is boring? I don’t think so. On and around Schokland there are plenty of exciting things to do. Look at the list below.

Sawing Stones (Stenen zagen)
Every first Sunday of the month you can have a stone sawn in the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden). Bring along your own stone which you picked up on holiday, or buy one at the center. The inside of the rock tells the story of what it is or where it came from. Is yours an ordinary type? Or did it come all the way from Finland?
When: Every 1st Sunday of the month in De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).
Time: 1 pm – 4 pm

Treasure Digging (Schatgraven)
How good are you at digging for a treasure? In De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden) there is a treasure-hunting pit for little precious stones and fossils. At the visitor’s center you can borrow a small scoop. The treasures are somewhere in the sand, but can you find them?
When: During opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).
Cost: Free.

Baribal Route (Baribal Route)
Baribal, the Nosy Bear, takes you on a discovery trip through the Schokland wood. The guiding text is in Dutch, so, if you cannot read it, you may need someone to interpret it for you. Maybe one of your Dutch friends wants to join you?
When: The booklet is for sale during opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).

Sounds under the Trees Route (Doe-route stenensprong)
Listen to the sound of wood and of stone. Discover how the sound of your voice can travel under the ground. This route is part of the tour of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden). A leaflet (in Dutch) explaining the route is available at the center.
When: Every day.
Cost: Free.

Backpack Route (Van gletsjer tot bosgrond)
Texts are in Dutch, so you may need someone to interpret them for you. The title means ‘From glacier to wood soil’. The route explains the origins of Flevoland. It takes you on a walk through De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden) and the wood. In the backpack you find texts and utensils to help you out with questions about the soil, animals, plants and rocks. When you have finished, after handing in your answers, you get a genuine ‘Ranger Certificate’.
When: During opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).

Cache Seeking on a Deserted Island (Speuren over een verlaten eiland)
Texts are in Dutch, so you may need someone to interpret them for you. On Schokland a number of caches have been hidden in the ground. With a map of the island, special clues and coordinates, you will find them all, of course! Have you found one? Put the stamp of the cache on your route card. Are you able to locate the two ‘wild’ cache boxes? The caches are not all that easy to find!
When: During opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden) and at Museum Schokland.

Exhibition
In the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden) you find the story of the formation of rocks on earth and the history of Schokland. There are a lot of special stones to be seen here, some of them with real fossils in them. On one stone you can even see a dino’s footprints!
When: During opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).
Cost: Free.

Children’s Attic
Do you like to play a game, make drawings or solve a puzzle? In the attic of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden) there are lots of fun things to do. You can crawl into a dark cave and discover fluorescent minerals (that glow in the dark). Come and see for yourself what else is there for children to do.
When: During opening hours of the visitor’s center of De Gesteentetuin (Geo-garden).
Cost: Free.
